This symbol is that of a man that was a Royal Arch Mason as well as a Master Mason who was active in his local Masonic Blue Lodge. Although the highest degree that a "Free and Accepted Mason" can attain is that of a 'Master Mason', there are other appended organizations and the 'Royal Arch Mason' is one of them. Initially, there are three degrees that an individual is required to attain to become a Mason; 'Entered Apprentice', 'Fellow-Craft' and then he is raised to 'Master Mason'.
Although "Master Mason" is the highest degree in the "Free and Accepted Masons" fraternity, there are other appended organizations which require that the member first be a "Master Mason" in order to participate. In each of these appended organizations, the Master Mason is instructed in additional degrees. Some of these appended organizations are; York Rite Mason, Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner.

TWO BOYS DROWNED
They Went Skating on Thin Ice and Broke Through.

Last Saturday morning two boys, Nelson Wickliffe, aged seven years, and Willie VanWinkle, aged nine years, were drowned at Seabright. YoungWickliffe was the son of O. H. Wickliffe and the other boy was the son of Stephen VanWinkle. They went skating on the ice on the river at the foot of Peninsula avenue. After going out on the ice a little way the ice broke, and the boys sank in eight feet of water..Mr. Nelson, the keeper of the Seabright draw-bridge, heard the boys shouting , but he supposed they were at play. Afew minutes later he took his field
glass and saw something black near one of the pilings of the dock. He hurried over to the dock and saw the body of the Wickliffe boy, half sustained by a cake of ice. He got a boat and took the body ashore, where Dr. James J.. Reed and a number of the fishermen did their utmost to.restore life to the body, but without avail.
It was not until noon that it was learned that Willie VanWinkle was also drowned. He did not come home to
dinner, and his father started out to look for him, He learned that his boy had last been seen going toward the
river with Nelson Wickliffe and he hurried to the dock. The first thing he saw was his son's hat just under the dock. "My God!" he cried, "My boy is drowned !" A search of the river bottom was at once begun, and Mr. Wicklilfe, who was raking tbe bottom of the river with a rake, soon found the body and raised it to the surface. With the assistance of Col. E. S. Neabitt and George F. Hudson the body was carried home, where Mrs.VanWinkle was almost frantic with grief.
The funeral service over the body of Nelson Wickliffe was held at two o'clock on Monday afternoon, at the Seabright Methodist church. The funeral of Willie VanWinkle was held yesterday at Fair Haven.
