Oma Goddard Love stories posted on Ancestry.com: 2009 Bonnye Reed FryShortly after her second marriage to John Robert Goddard, Mary Ellen Barron Mardis Goddard's younger brother Jesse Barron met and fell in love with Mary Ellen's new step-daughter, Berty Goddard. They married during the families years of farming in the Tyrone, NM area, and later moved back to Alabama.
Mary Ellen's eldest Goddard daughter, Tina, fell in love with her new step-mother Dorthe Ketner Goddard's older brother Robert, who had just returned from the European theatre, WWI. The family detoured (by covered wagon, no less) from their route home to Roswell, NM from Blount County, Alabama by way of the Oklahoma Ketner family homes so that Dorthe could visit her siblings. Robert returned to NM with his father to file a homestead claim in Rock Valley, and upon their return to Oklahoma on Dec 30 1922 Robert and Tina were married and set out in a covered wagon of their own to New Mexico. They traveled in tandum with Robert's father John Daniel Ketner.
In 1921 John Robert Goddard was called to the bedside of his ailing sister Susie Goddard Pierce, in Waco, Tx. While there he contracted the flu and died. Susie recovered, and shortly after she and her family moved back to the Blount County, Alabama area.
Dorthe J. Ketner Goddard continued to raise the younger daughters of John Robert and Mary Ellen Barron Goddard (Lorena, Doodie [Eunice] and Bessie) along with her two daughters, Oma and Dickie (Loma) in Roswell. Life was pretty hard for a woman with 5 daughters to feed. In 1923 she married Eunice Lewis, who ran off the older girls before he died in 1930. *************

Lorena married the younger Rogers brother, Berl. Later Doodie married the older brother, Ben. During WWII many of the children of the Goddard-Mardis-Ketner family worked the copper mines in Arizona. Irene Mardis Miller, Bobby Ellen Ketner Leslie, Lorrena Goddard Rogers, Doodie (Eunice) Goddard Rogers, Bessie Goddard Pehl all spent the war years in Arizona. Bessie and Ed Pehl and Irene and Bill Miller continued to make their home in Arizona after the war. Bobby Ellen and Preston Leslie, Lorrina and Berl Rogers, and Doodie and Ben Rogers moved to southern California in the early 50's.
Despite the many problems in her life, Dorthe remained the mainstay of her family. She was mother/sister support group to all of the Goddard-Mardis-Ketner children and her positive outlook and wonderful smile were unforgettable. In 1935 Dorthe married Shorty Langley and had a son, Eddie in 1937 with him before she divorced him. Her daughter Dickie Goddard Campbell died at the age of 19 in 1940, of complications of child birth, leaving two daughters of her own. Dorthe died in 1944 after a long battle with breast cancer. her oldest daughter, Omaha Goddard Kuzawinski served in WWII in the European theatre as a driver for an officer. She was injured by a roadside bomb late in the war but eventually recovered. Oma died in Baltimore, MD in 1980. Dorthe's son Eddie Langley lives in Missouri. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------John Robert Goddard told his daughter Tina Velma that he always felt he had a calling to preach but there were always too many mouths to feed for him to get the proper schooling. When he was just a boy, 14 or 15, his father died, and he became the breadwinner for his four younger siblings and mother. Shortly after he lost his father, his mother died, as well. In 1884 at the age of 19 he married Mary Hazelwood, nicknamed Tina (pronounced with broad I) and in 1890 they began their family, including two sets of twins. Eva only lived a couple of years, and Johnny died at or shortly after birth. Freddie died before his fourth birthday. In 1901 Mary "Tina" Hazelwood Goddard died, leaving John Robert a widower with daughters Bertie and Evelyn, and son Austin.
In 1902 John Robert married Mary Ellen Barron Mardis, a widow with three children, Walter Lee, Elmer Clarence "Slim", and Flossie Irene Mardis, combining their families for a total of 6 children. As they farmed across Blount Cty, Alabama, Big Hill, Texas and Tyrone, New Mexico, John Robert and Mary Ellen added four daughters to the mix - Tina Velma, Bessie L., Willie Lorena, and Eunice M. "Doodie". In 1917, Mary Ellen Barron Mardis Goddard died after an extended illness the result of T.B. and Lupus, in Roswell, NM. She is buried at South Park Cemetery, Roswell. The younger children were placed with relatives in Roswell NM while the older kids returned to Tyrone with John Robert to bring in the crops. Once in Tyrone, Irene Mardis and Berty Goddard ganged up on their dad, and talked him into offering marriage to their friend Dorothe J. Ketner in Roswell. He wrote, she accepted, and the extended family including the younger kids met in Clovis for the marriage. The family was complete again, and returned to Tyrone for another year or two of farming before they began their trek back to Alabama to introduce the kids and Dorothe to the family in Blount County. Dorothe and John Robert added Omaha and Loma "Dickie" to thier melting pot in the early 20's and settled in the Roswell area on their return from Alabama by way of Oklahoma. John Robert died of flu while visiting his ailing sister Susie Goddard Pearce in Waco, Texas in 1921
