Keatley Graham Baker,69, superintendent of the Black Belt Experiment Station since 1931 and one of the most widely-recognized figures in Alabama's agricultural forces, died unexpectedly at his home near Marion Junction at 9 a.m. Thursday.
He was taken ill during Wednesday night, after a day spent in his usual duties. News of the death called forth numerous expressions of loss from many souces.
Native of Texas
Mr. Baker, a native of Texas, came to Auburn with the Extension Service and some 20 years ago took charge of the then young undeveloped Black Belt Experiment Station. Under his direction the program there has enlarged to become the spearhead for a new economy --that of cattle --for the entire Central Alabama section. He has become recognized thruout the south as one of the vital and constructive forces behind the movement to cattle, his pasture building program at the station have attracted south-wide attention.
Mr. Baker also has won recognition as Agriculture's "Man of the Year" from the Progressive farmer and he has served on mnay organization, commissions and conference groups to further agriculture
Harmon Carter, president of the Selma and Dallas County Chamber of Commerce said today that agriculture has lost one of its important leaders and this section will miss his far-seeing knowledge and direction.
Baker was born in Quanah, Texas and graduated from Kansas State College.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Ora Lee Baker; a son, K.G. Baker, Jr. of Montgomery and three sisters, Mesdames W.O. Neal, Quanah, Texas; Belva Foster and Ora Page, Amarillo, Texas.
Funeral arrangements will be announced thru Breslin Service.

Fitchburg - Gladys L. (LaFrance) Bellio, 77, of 5 Alden St., died Saturday, Dec 30 in her home after a long illness.
Born Jan. 7, 1918 in Leominster, she was the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Fields) La France and had lived in Leominster for many years before moving to Fitchburg in 1979.
Mrs. Bellio had worked at the Miles Kedex Co. in Leominster for a year. She and her late husband had owned and operated the former Bellio's Market in Fitchburg for many years.
She was a member of the Madonna of the Holy Rosary Church and a volunteer at the Leominster Hospital Gift Shop for many years.
She leaves a son, Joseph L. Bellio of Fitchburg; three daughters, Roseann F. Bellio of Fitchburg; Maria L. vitello of Athol and frances M. Gaumond of Marlboro and four grandchildren.
Her husband Louis J. "Bob" Bellio died Sept 3, 1994.
The funeral will be h eld Wednesday from M.A. Simard and Son Funeral Home, 14 Walker St., Leominster with a Mass at 9 a.m. in Madonna of the Holy Rosary Church, 118 Theresa St., Fitchburg. Burial will be in St. Leo's Cemetery, Leominster. Calling hours at the funeral home are Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
