Article in the Fitchburg Daily Sentiinel, Nov 4, 1901:
KILLED BY ELECTRIC
Leonard Field Badly Mangled While Lying Across Suburban Tracks

Leonard Field was struck by a Leominster bound electric on the Worcester Consolidated road Sunday evening and the injuries which he sustained caused his death later on. The victim was a native and life=long resident of Fitchburg, brother of Frank and George Field, and his old failing the drink habit undoubtedly was responsible for the sudden end of his life.
The electric which left this city at 6:30, Motorman George Oakes and Conductor Fred Stockwell was the car that did the killing, but Supt. Burgess who has carefully investigated can find not the slightest reason to censure his men. It happened on the downgrade near the Russell place and Hayward street and the car was not going at too great speed . The 6 per cent (number is hard to read) slant made it impossible to stop the car in the 50 feet which intervened when the motorman first saw him, although the car was reversed.
Motorman Oakes first noticed a huddled object lying across the gutter rail and at once reversed his car. As he approached he saw the figure of a man with the head and shoulders outside the rails toward the gutter. The car was not going fast when the man was struck and the body did not go under the car but was pushed off to one side down an embankment about six feet high.
Supt. Burgess saw Field soon after the accident and the injured man was able to tell his name but of course could give no information as to what had happened before the accident. It is said that he had been around in that vicinity for a considerable part of the afternoonw and was in an intoxicated condition.
The man was at once taken on the car to the office of Dr. L.H. Merrill at Leominister who, assisted by Dr. A.H. Pierce made an external examination, finding a compound fracture of both bones of the right leg, the left leg crushed and nearly severed, a fracture of the pelvis, and a fracture of the skull. The doctors decided that while there was little or no chance of saving the man's life, the only thing to do was to amputate the severed leg, which was done, and the flow of blood stopped. As quickly as possible after the operation, Field was taken to the Burbank hospital in an ambulance. He was accompanied by one of the physicians who attended him. Field died within 10 minutes after he reached the institution.
Field was unmarried and had been living lately with his sister, Mrs. Miranda Lajoie.
