Elinor C. Saltus dies; build UA library science program

Elinor C. Saltus, a teacher of children's literature who founded the
University of Arizona School of Library Science, died Friday in Burlington, Vt. She
was 90. Saltus began teaching children's literature courses in the UA College
of Education after moving to Tucson with her family in 1956. For 17 years,
she helped the program grow into what today is a school within the College of
Social and Behavioral Sciences.

In 1957, Saltus told The Arizona Daily Star that schools needed to place
increasing emphasis on teaching children to read good books. ``A good deal of
reading was done in the family 50 years ago,'' she said then. ``Now, however,
many children come to school from homes without books.''

Saltus continued the library science program on her own until 1966 when she
hired Ronald Van De Voorde, now retired.

``She was a very honest, forthright person who had high standards - in her
teaching and for her students,'' Van De Voorde said yesterday. ``She lived a
long and rich life.''

Saltus was born Jan. 13, 1906, in Faribault, Minn. She grew up in Bathgate,
