Born at Fitchburg, But Had Lived Here 50 Years ---Headed Suffrage Extension League in 1915

Mrs. Metille DeL. Brooks, wife of Richard S.. Brooks of Stapleton road, died yesterday morning at Springfield hospital after a brief illness. She was born at Fitchburg, the daughter of Jeremiah and Mary (Field) Lucius but had lived in this city about 50 years. Mrs. Brooks was graduated from the academy department of American-International college. During the state campaign for equal suffrage in 1915, she was president of the Suffrage Extension League.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Brooks leaves two sons, Howard E. Pease and Herbert V. Pease, both of this city; a daughter, Mrs. Marion P. Coleman of this city; three grandchildren, Barbara A. and Richard S. Coleman and Dorothy L. Pease; two sisters, Mrs. Stephen Duquette and Mrs. Miles Bronson, both of this city and three brothers, Edward Lucius of Chicopee Falls, Charles Saltus of Madison, Wis., and George Mayo of East Hartford, Ct.
The funeral will be held at the parlors of the Dickinson-Streeter company at 2 Friday afternoon, with an organ prelude by Dorothy Birchard Mulroney at 1:30. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery.

ASHFIELD - Funeral services for Howard H. Pease, 79, of Bronson Ave. who died Monday at a local nursing home will take place Thursday afternoon. at 2 in the Ashfield Congregational Church with Rev. Richard Barnett, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Plain Cemetery. Visiting hours are this evening from 7 to 9 at the Smith funeral home, Shelburne Falls. was Mr. Pease was born here August 7, 1886 the son of William and Clara (Perry) Pease and had resided all his life in this town. He was a carpenter and builder. He was a trustee of the Sanderson Academy and member of the Congregational Church and the Ashfield Historical Society. Besides his widow, the former Electa Stetson, whom he married Nov 8, 1917, he leaves four sons, Howard of New Milford, Conn; Ruel of Jacksonville, Fla., and Clifton and Ralph of Ashfield,; one daughter Mrs. Lucy Schoreder of Pittsfield; several grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Chicopee, June 5 Edward L. Lucius, 79, of 164 Edwards St., Aldenville, died yesterday at the Holyoke Hospital after a short illness. He was born in Fitchburg and had been a resident of Aldenville for 40 years. Before his retirement several years ago he had been engaged in the harness-making business. He leaves his wife Mrs. Almina (Lathrop) Lucius; a son, Edward L. Lucius, Jr, of Springfield; and a daughter, Mrs. Helen Butler of Thompsonville, Conn, and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will take place at the J. H. Fleury and Sons funeral home, Holyoke, Tuesday at 2. Cremation will follow at Springfield Cemetery, Springfield.

Nelson Ray Lucius [Parents] [scrapbook] was born on 21 Feb 1898 in Brookfield, MO. He died on 11 Apr 1971 in Elk City, KS. He was buried on 13 Apr 1971 in Oak Hill Cem., Elk City, KS. He married Blanche Seller on 17 Jun 1931.

Obituary on Nelson Lucius found in the Independence Daily Reporter dated April 12, 1971

Nelson Lucius, 73, of Route 2 Elk City, died at 7:35 a.m. Sunday in the Caney Municipal Hospital where he had been a patient the past three weeks.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Webb Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Carl Packard officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at Elk City.

Nelson Lucius was born February 21, 1898, at Brookfield, Missouri the son of Oliver and Sylvia (Pierce) Lucius. He moved to the Elk City vicinity to the present home site in 1913 and had resided there since that time. He attended Elk City and Independence schools and also attended the University of Kansas. He had been a farmer all his life.

He was a veteran of World War 1. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Missouri, a member of the Elk City Grange and at one time was a member of the Circle Valley school board.

He married Blanche Seller June 17, 1931, and she survives at the home. Also surviving is one sister, Olive Kolodziej of Detroit, Mich.

He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.


From the Prima Annual of 1916, first annual that was published from Elk City High School. Among the seniors was Nelson Lucius. There is a senior picture and a baby picture of him.

....The class won the three prizes offered. Nelson Lucius, Louise Musson, Oscar Owen and Lucille Clark, of the Juniors, debated against Claudine Cook, Amos Bishop, William Pendarvis and William Newkirk, of the Freshman Class on the Question: Resolved - That Napoleon was greater than Caesar" Affirmative Junior team winning. This gave the class a beautiful Silver Cup.

Note: it looks like they also have a picture of the winning debate team, and it sure looks like the same guy (Nelson) in it but it does not name the students under the picture.

My grandparents are gone. I remember my mother telling about me one time. I started across the field NW to Lucius’s house. My mother couldn’t find me and she looked and seen my red head going through the grass to their house. I always knew that Blanche had cookies so I started out!!! I was about 2-3 years old.

Born in Holyoke, Mass., she had lived in Enfield the last 60 years. She was
employed by the former Malone Knitting Co. of Springfield, Mass., for 25 years,
retireing in 1962. She was a member of the Enfield Artists Club. She leaves
three sons, Herbert D. Butler of Enfield, George A. Butler II of West
Springfield, Mass., and Ernest Butler of Narragansett, R.I.; three daughters, Helen
Waterhouse of Windsor, Hazel Kelly of Columbus, Ohio, and Pearl Keith of
Longmeadow, Mass.; 17 granchildren; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Memorial at the Nicholson & Carmon Funeral Home, 443 East St., Suffield.
