DON TANKERSLEY
Born of Parents Who Came To Texas 70 Years AgoWe take pleasure in presenting our readers with the portrait of one of the best and truest men that ever lived in Texas or any other state as to that matter. Don Tankersley was born at Georgetown in 1850. His father came to Texas in 1840 and his mother was born in Texas while it was still under the Mexican government. The most of Don Tankersley's life has been spent on the outskirts of civilization. His father was killed by the Indians. In 1862 at a point on what is now a line between Brown and Comanche Counties. His brother, Lee Tankersley, who at one time was sheriff of Bell county, and who later was Superintendent of the State Reformatory four years, was born not far from where Brownwood now stands.
His grandfather was the first commissioner that Williamson county had after being organized. He has been public cotton weigher of Killeen for twelve years. So highly esteemed is he by his neighbors, that it is frequently remarked that should he run for a county office, that he would get every vote cast at Killeen. What a tribute to a man! For a man to live in the heaerts of his neighbors as does Don Tankersley is to be valued more than all the gold of the world. But a man who has such devoted friends as he has is worthy of them, for if he had not always been as true as steel to them, they in turn would have fallen away. He has raised a most splendid family --eight in number and each of them an honor to their town and parents. One of his daughters is the wife of Sam Adams, a young man held in the highest esteem by all who know hijm, another is the wife of Earl Chanslor the sterling young business man who heads the hardware and furniture establishment of Chanslor & Pace of this city. In accumulating this world's goods Don Tankersley has not succeeded as well as some of his neighbors, but in all the essentials that go to make up the true man--a man with a heart so big and noble that no sacrifice was ever too great for him to make for a friend, he has distanced most all of them. There is no future honor that Bell county could bestow upon Don Tankersley that he would not be worthy of.
