R.L. Smart, 76, died at his home at 606 South Rusk Street. 7;00 p.m. Monday. Born in Mississippi 8-27-1879. Came to Parker County when he was five.
Operated a grocery store. Survivors: wife, 2 daughters, Mrs. G.W. Laughlin of Baytown, Mrs. L.J. McBride of Fort Worth. Sons: Arthur Smart, Fullerton, Calif, Vernon Smart, USAF Guam, Leslie Smart and Harold Smart, both of Weatherford. 19 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Funeral 10:00 Jan 30th at Central Christian Church with Rev. John Enochs and Minister Claud C. Smith officiating. Burial in Curtis Cemetery. White's Funeral Home in charge. Has marker at grave.

"Mom" is my Grandmother, us kids always called her Mom but mom is Maggie (Margaret) she changed her name Perry Graham- Cook - Sharp. She married Claude J. Sharp in 1929 or 1930, but he died shortly there after in Fort Smith on or about July 25,1930. He owned the Model Drug Store in Altus, Arkansas.
My Grandmother was living in El Paso when she married Sharp, she never lived in AZ although one of her sons was born there.. She always went to her mother to have a baby. After Sharp died, she and Mary Jane Graham moved to El Paso, where they lived with my father, until he got married in 1936. At that point Mary Jane married a man name Jones and moved to Washington D.C. We were living in El Paso and dad was in politics, and working for the Southern Pacific. He ran for sheriff and lost.His mother, aunt and brother were all living in Southern California and also I had asthma. All being factors of the move. We lived in Los Angeles until my folks built a house in Baldwin Park, east of Los Angeles about 20 miles. I went to school at a local college, joined the Navy for 2 years and after got in a business (service station) with a guy that was a life long friend that just passed away in September. In 1968 got married to a girl (school teacher) from Boston, MA and moved in a house in West Covina, CA, had one boy, Rob now 39 years, living in Claremont, CA, 20 miles to the east with his family a step-daughter, (she is a senior at UCSB) and a boy (Grant) 13 years. His wife (Jacqui) is a stay-at-home mom. He is the best of kids, a great father, and has a great job; making lots of money so I don't worry about him. He has to worry about me. I guess the best story is: Alice (wife) and I were at a family party and a fellow said why doesn't Rob drink, cuss, smoke or raise hell? I said don't blame me, blame her, pointing to Alice. Had to stop because I got a phone call from my granddaughter thanking me for a card and money I sent her for Christmas-- she's a keeper too.
My sister Dana Cook Gerhardt lives with her husband and dog (no children) in the winter in Arizona, out in the sticks about 50 or 60 miles north west of Phoenix in a town named Congress. They have a trailer, own a small lot and are planning to have a park home (small house) on the property. In the summer they live in Meadow Valley, outside of Quincy CA., That is in northern California northwest of Reno NV about 1 hours driving, (Out in the sticks). Her husband Ron is trying to talk me into moving to Meadow Valley in the summer, where they have 5 acres and some cabins I could have one them and to buy a park home in AZ in the winter. It is beautiful there.
Back to me - In the 70's I became a pilot, then a Flight Instructor. I don't fly anymore but have about 5000 hours and lot of stories. In the late 70's own and operated a flight school and sold airplanes. Grumman. 1980 started teaching in an Adult program teaching Automotive Technology, working at an Adult school and Community College retiring in 2002. Still have a night class and sub for that class only. My wife Alice died in May of 08. She had been on dialysis for 30 years and in 2005 was in intensive care for 2 mouths. That started her down hill and I spent most of my time after that with her. She was a very good person and God will reward her.
Would be easier telling you what I don't do. I do not spend time cleaning the house (too big), I never volunteer my time, but I do go to places with the Senior Center, and eat lunch on Tuesday and Thursdays. Last trip was to the Nethercutt Collection (google it) of Automobiles and musical instruments, going back on Feb 7 for a silent movie and concert, music supplied by a 5000 pipe organ. Christmas went to the Reagan Library. He had gone to 26 countries and they had Christmas trees from all of those countries. Also to the Nixon Library in February. Over Christmas vacation I drove out to Congress and then went with my sister, husband and dog to Texas. We drove through El Paso to San Antonio, up the 35-highway corridor to Dallas and Fort Worth then back through northern Texas into New Mexico where my mother was born. All of my mother's generation is gone except my aunt. She lives in Meadow Valley and is 101 years old and can not remember family history.

I really don't know very much at all! Jessie Opal Rich was born 11 Apr 1909 Trezevant, Carroll Co., Tennessee, d. 05 May 2004 San Diego Co., California. All of the rest of her siblings were born in Missouri.
"Scamp" was Opal's 1st husband. They had no children. I have found two pictures of him that were sent to me by Opal's daughter, Ann. Ann lives in San Diego and has a lot of old family pictures, however, I have had a hard time getting her to make copies of them!
Opal's mother, Edna Stella Vogel-Rich, died suddenly in 1923 in San Pedro, CA and Opal was adopted by her aunt Winifred. Opal was the only girl in a family of five boys, and her aunt thought she would be better off with a female influence. Opal went by the last name of Dwyer. I don't know if she was legally adopted or not. Winifred loved the "high life" and when Opal met Scamp, aunt Winifred encouraged Opal to marry him. She was a very beautiful girl. She did modeling at that time. It looks like they were probably married about 1925, when she was 16 years old. When they divorced, I have no idea. Opal married again on 11 Jun 1934 to Orville Tremaine. Opal's daughter, Ann, has told me that Opal was never good about sharing things about her life.
