An affidavit from his brother, A.W.Tankersley, states that in his earlier enlistment he had the measles and came home. When he got well, he joined and served in Capt. Charles L. Jordan's Co. K, 5th Texas Cavalry, CSA. Apparently there is no official record of this, but many records are missing. This was accepted by the pension committee.
