Pearl M. Collier

Funeral services for Mrs. Pearl M. Collier, 84, will be held today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. in the Holbrook Community Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert D. Farley officiating. Burial will be in the Holbrook Cemetery.
Mrs. Collier died on Monday, Oct. 18, in the Winslow Manor Nursing Home. She was born in Gatesville, Tex., and came to Arizona in 1931. She lived on the Paulsell Ranch in Navajo since that time.
Survivors include one son, C.E. Phillips of Channing, Tex.; one daughter, Mrs Juanita Paulsell of Holbrook; two sisters, Mrs. Myrtle Evans of Ft. Worth, Tex., and Mrs. W.J. Dykes of Honeygrove, Tex.; nine grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Owens Mortuary.

Cemetery listing states her death year was 1921 but death certificate lists 1922 - age 93yrs 6 months
This family cemetery is located within the Black River Village on the family
land. Black River Village is located south of Carlsbad, NM. Taking the
highway towards El Paso, TX, there will be a sign directing you to the left,
(east) before getting to White's City (Carlsbad Caverns). The family
cemetery is seen from the road after entering the village which is several
miles from the intersection. It is nestled among some very large Cotton Wood
trees along the banks of the Black River. This is a well cared for family
plot. It is cared for by the great granddaughter of Julian Smith who lives
on the land and in the original house built by Julian and Mottie Smith in
1884.

This land was originally homesteaded by Julian Smith in 1883. Prior to
getting this homestead, Julian Smith lived in San Angelo, TX. A year later
he moved onto the land and built a house that looks to the south at the
Guadalupe Mountains and the highest point in Texas, Guadalupe Peak.

This was a very large homestead in 1883. Over the years Julian Smith sold
much of the land to the Bounds Family. The Bounds still live in Black River
also and have a Bounds Family Cemetery

in the City Hall records of the Town Board Meetings there is a reference to a Dick Smith who leased what they called "the Town Ranch" for $75 a year (cash in hand) as early as Febrary of 1914.

On April 27, 1927 minutes of the town board, the following:
The bonds of James T. Davis, water clerk, and R. F. SMITH, Marshall, and A. A. Larson, Police Magistrate, were accepted. John Boccaccio was Mayor at the time, and W. B. Hughes, Town Clerk.
He was paid a monthly salary of $125.00 till about Jan 26, 1931 he began receiving only $80 a month and the last entry was made on Oct. 12, 1931 where he was paid $40.

Obit, Modesto Bee:
Robley D. Smith, until the illness with which he has suffered for the past six years came upon him, one of the most prominent cattlemen in Colorado and Texas, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs Mary Plagg, 814 First Street, at an early hour yesterday morning.

He was a native of Texas and 75 years of age. Thirteen years ago he left Colorado and came to California locating at a ranch near Turlock. For the past six years he has made his home with his daughter in Modesto. He was a veteran of the Civil War. After the war he engaged in the cattle business in Texas, Utah and Colorado for many years. His mother, Mrs Clara Smith, is yet living in New Mexico, nearly 100 years of age. Other surviving relatives include two other children, C.R. Smith, Modesto, and Mrs Clara Sutton, San Francisco, besides four brothers and three sisters.

The funeral will be held from the chapel of Wood, Shannon & Duncan, 921 Twelfth Street, at 3 o'clock this afternoon. Mrs True Brown, spiritualist read [?] of Stockton will officiate and interment will be in the Citizens cemetery.

Isabella F. Campbell was born in Nov 1848 in AR. She died on 4 May 1918 in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Co., CA. She was buried on 7 May 1918 in Oakwood Cem., Santa Cruz Cem., Santa Cruz, CA. She married Robley D. Smith on 23 Aug 1865 in Georgetown, Williamson Co., TX.

MRS. ISABELLA SMITH DIED ON SATURDAY

Mrs. Isabella F. Smith, an esteemed resident of the county, passed away Saturday at her home on Thirty-fifth avenue, where she had resided for several years with her son. She was sixty-nine years of age and a native of Arkansas.
She is survived by her son and two daughters. Mrs. Clara E. Sutton of San Francisco and Mrs. Mary Plag of Modesto.
The funeral will be held from the home tomorrow morning and interment will be made in Oakwood cemetery.
