Earl Banks Johnson '43
Capt. Earl Banks Johnson USN (Ret.) died on 29 March 1982 in DeSoto, Missouri.
Appointed to the Naval Academy from the State of Alabama, he was graduated with the Class of 1943 on 19 June 1942 and ordered to sea in DORAN, participating in the invasion landings at Safi, French Morocco. The following year he attended submarine school and spent most of his naval career in this branch of the naval service, having duty in PERMIT, ODAX, GREENFISH, TUSK, duty with ComSubLant and then assisgnment to the University of Mississippi with the NROTC.
He returned to submarines in GUDGEON, then had command of TIRU before joining the staff of the submarine school, had command of Submarine Division Sixty-three, followed by assignment to SACEUR in Paris for three years. Later he had command of the SALAMONIE, then was a student at the Naval War College and as his final active duty was professor of naval science at the University of Missouri. He was transferred to the retired list in 1970. While on active duty he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Comitas V and the Navy Unit Citation.
After retiring he was a professor of American government and international affairs at Jefferson College, Hillsboro, Missouri until 1978, having earned a master's degree in international relations from George Washington University.
He is survived by his widow Eola Terry, Box 86-A, Star Route West, DeSoto, MO 63020; two daughters; a brother; and two grandchildren.
