MONSON - Dr. Franklin W. Gallo, 77, of Thayer Rd., died Wednesday at Health South in Ludlow. Born in Pittsfield, MA, he has been a resident of Monson since the 1950s. He grew up in Springfield and graduated from Tech High. He received his BA in Sociology from AIC and a MA degree from Boston University. Professor Gallo received his Ph.D. in 1971 from Columbia University, writing his dissertation on "A Sociological and Social-Psychological Analysis of Anglo-American Grand Strategy Conferences in World War Two". His serious intellectual investigation into his subject grew out of a lifelong interest in the history of WWII. He was the chairman of the Sociology department at AIC for many years. He was an avid golfer and was the golf coach at AIC from 1970 until retirement in 1987. He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy L. (Pease) Gallo, in 2001. He leaves 3 sons, Derek C. of Middlefield, Deane P. and his wife Kelly of Monson, and Garry W. and his wife Carolyn of Ludlow; and a daughter, Donna B. and her husband David Slozak of Monson. Loving grandfather of four. A memorial service will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Glendale United Methodist Church, Glendale Road, Wilbraham. Burial will be private. Lombard Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Dr. Gallo to the Monson Fire Department Ambulance Fund, PO Box 335, Monson, MA 01057.

Dorothy L. (Pease) Gallo, 75, of Thayer Road died Tuesday at Wing Memorial Hospital in Palmer. She was a registered nurse at the former Ludlow Hospital and the former Springfield Municipal Hospital. She worked previously in the actuary department of Massachusetts Mutual Insurance Co. and was a secretary for Chemical Corp. both in Springfield. Born in Springfield, she graduated from the former Technical High School in 1943. She entered the nurse training program at Springfield Technical Community College at the age of 50, and was licensed as a registered nurse. She was a well-known vocalist with several area dance bands in the 1940s and 1950s, and sang with a USO troupe which entertained at Air Force bases in the Azores and at Wheelus Field in Tripoli in 1951. She lived in Monson since 1956. She leaves her husband, Franklin W. Gallo; four sons, Randy Petersen of Hartford, Conn., Derek C. Gallo of Westfield, and Deane P. Gallo and Garry W. Gallo, both of Monson; a daughter, Donna Slozak of Monson; and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted on Sunday afternoon at Glendale Methodist Church in Wilbraham. Lombard Funeral Home is in charge. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oncology Department, Wing Memorial Hospital, 40 Wright St., Palmer, MA 01069.

Per his daughter Elizabeth, Joseph was going on a boating outing on Labor Day (the day he died). He had done some painting on the boat early in the morning, then came into the house and told his wife he didn't feel well and asked her to brew some ginger tea for him. He finished one cup and asked for another. When she delivered it to him, she found him dead.
