I went to the cemetery today but did not find his grave. The cemetery index which dates from 1956 has him listed as in Lane 10, plot 10 East. Maybe he doesn't have a headstone, or it was one of those flat cement stones that are no longer readable. Denton dies in hospital from illness of month.
Prominent Dothan Contractor had been seriously ill for over a week.
H.A. Denton, 60, prominent Dothan contractor, who has been seriously ill for a week suffering from internal bleeding, died in local hospital at 11:30 am today. Mr. Denton had been suffering from the disease for more than a month but his condition had not been serious until this week when he was moved to a hospital. Several blood transfusions were given in an attempt to save his life.
Mr. Denton came to Dothan from Selma, and entered the drug business here, operating the Cash Drug store for a number of years, later retiring.
At the time of his death he had engaged in the contracting business. He was a steward in the Foster Street Methodist Church and prominently identified in Dothan's social and business life and had many friends in the Wiregrass section as well as Dothan. He was one of the organizers of the Dothan Country Club.
Funeral arrangements were not completed today, but funeral and burial will take place in Dothan, probably tomorrow. Funeral will be conducted at the home of Dr. H.Green, his father -in-law. Funeral services for H.A. Denton, 62, prominent Dothan businessman who died Saturday morning following an illness of about a month, were conducted this morning at 10 o'clock from the home of Dr. & Mrs. H. Green, the parents of his widow, on North Oates Street. The Rev. W. R. Bickerstaff of the Foster Street Methodist Church conducted the services, assisted by the Rev. Clement Ritter of the First Presbyterian Church. Burial followed in the City cemetery, with Dowling & Rhodes in charge.
The deceased was born in Kentucky and came in Alabama about 25 years ago. Except for a short time in Selma, he lived during this time in Dothan.
On Dec 5, 1916, he was married to Miss Estelle Green.
Besides the widow, he is survived by six brothers, as follows: Jeff L.
Denton of Paris, KY, who attended the funeral; John B. of Iowa; K.S. of Canton, Ohio; William, of Hollywood Calif; A.N. of Owensville KY; and J.G.
of Paris KY.
Pallbearers were: Dr. H.A. Hicks, Byrd Kelly, Elgin Cowart, J.D.
Campbell, A.D. Ussery, E.R. Porter, and Grady Watford.The marriage on 5 Dec 1916 was for Harry A. Denton to Estelle Green, in Book 4, pg 201 Houston Co, AL.
