On her divorce decree in 1899, wife Ona states his age is 31 and living in Leavenworth, KS (no mention of detention at the Leavenworth prison.)
Appears on the 1900 census of Leavenworth, Kansas. Per federal records, he was incarcerated at Ft. Leavenworth Prison in 1896 and in 1901 for counterfeiting. His age is given as 35 at last birthday but birthdate is listed as Jul 1884 --that would have been before his parents' marriage.

There are two files: #434 and #831. The first file covers the term he served from March 10, 1896, to January 25, 1897; the second from June 17, 1897, to August 16, 1901. He apparently got involved in counterfeiting while in prison during his first term. This was discovered shortly after he was discharged. So he was arrested, tried, and sent back to Leavenworth.

MRS. ONA DEES, 70 DIES AT HOME OF DAUGHTER HERE
Mrs. Ona Dees, 70, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Pharis Johnson in Greensboro on August 30, following an illness of about five weeks. Although Mrs. Dees spent much of her time away from here, she retained Greensboro as her home. She was an active member of the Baptist Church from which her funeral was held Monday morning, conducted by the Rev. W. G. Greenlees, pastor of the Presbyterian Church and burial took place in the Greensboro Cemetery. The host of friends and relatives present together with the lovely floral offering showed the love and high esteem in which Mrs. Dees was held.
Mrs Dees is survived by the following children, all of whom were at her bedside at the time of her death; Mrs. Charles N. Petty, Madisonville, Ky.; Mr. Byron C. Banks, Greensboro; Mrs. Pharis Johnson, Greensboro; Mrs. A. B. Collier, Augusta, Ga; Mr. J. E. Dees, Winston-Salem, N.C.; Mrs. R. F. Wise, Savannah, Georgia; Mrs. Ralph Dunville, Richmond, Va.; and Mrs. Cecil Busby, Robards, Ky. Also she is survived by two sisters; Mrs. E. E. Evins, of Jasper and Mrs. W. M. Farrar of Birmingham and one brother, Lenard McDaniel of Birmingham. Active pall-bearers were; George E. Sledge, W. W. Ramey, John Jay, V. F. Crabtree, W. K. Johnson, L. M. Hamilton and Lee Sullivan.

Information on Johnny Hogland contributed by his grandson Merrall Hogland of IN. in 2001 and by Virginia Fields Hill.(a descendant of Johnny's brother Henry). Johnny's death certificate was the source for the cause of death and cemetery. He left a widow and 5 young children .Johnny was killed by a falling chimney while tearing down a house near the Sipsey River in northeast Walker Co, AL. He owned a farm on Bugtussle mountain at the time.(in the vicinity of what is now Smith Lake). The family farm was lost.

She was my great-grandmother, and I knew her as a very little girl. I am soon to be 36 and I was around 4 when she passed away. Her maiden name was Annie Bailey(b8/24/1883,d5/23/1974. She was married first to my great grandfather, John Wesley Hogland (Johnny)b11/10/1882 d1/5/1915. He died when my grandfather(Homer Wesley Hogland) was only 6 when their chimney fell on him at their farm in Cullman County Alabama, Arkadeplhia is where it was located. After his death it was too much for Grandma Hester to try and keep up. She had 5 young children, and eventually lost the farm. It was several years later that she remarried to William Hester, and they had 2 children.
