Notes from Alan Kendall [alankendall18@gmail.com] who lives outside London as of Apr 2011
Thomas C. Giles (son of Leander Giles and Emeline Presley) and Eda Ham had a daughter named Della Jane. She in turn married Hugh Curtis Whatley and they had a son Edward Clearsy Whatley. Edward was born in Cullman Co. AL but the family upped sticks and moved to Eufaula OK some time after 1930.

Edward joined the USAF at Oklahoma City and during his service he served 3 tours in the United Kingdom. The first was during WW2 when he met and married an English girl Marjorie with whom he had a son. His second tour to the UK was in the early to mid 1950's where he met my natural mother by whom he fathered myself and my brother Ean (whilst still married to his wife !!). I believe the Air Force found out what had happened as he was posted back to the US very quickly in August 1955 with his wife and son just 2 months before I was born. My bother Ean is just 13 months older than I am. Shortly after my birth in October 1955 I was put up for adoption as my mother could not raise two small boys by herself. Hence my surname being Kendall. My brother remained with my mother. Edward came back to the UK again in the 1960's but only for a short time.

My father remained in the USAF until he retired and he died in Lompoc CA in 1997. It wasn't until 2004 that I discovered all this and started researching the American side of my family which has been a fantastic journey and one that has thrown up many things that are surprising, humbling and thought provoking. In particular that the Whatley's appear to have been amogst the earliest English settlers in the US.

Given the above you won't be surprised to hear that I live in the UK (near Oxford) so all my research is done at a distance. It is always good to make contact with someone who is doing similar research so I look forward to hearing back from you.
