SAN ANGELO — W. Curtis Beck, 84, of San Angelo died Monday, Jan. 16, 2006, in a local nursing home.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, in Johnson’s Funeral Home chapel with the Rev.
Francis Strother officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery.
Mr. Beck was born Sept. 18, 1921, in Tom Green County in the community of Harriett. He was the first
child of Charles and Floy Beck.
He attended grade school in Harriett, San Angelo and the last two years of high school in Miles, Texas,
graduating in 1938. He was active in school sports, played football, basketball, ran track, boxed in
golden gloves and played on 14 different championship softball teams over a span of 20 years. Curtis
was active in 4-H Club and showed several champion lambs and was Gold Star and Wilson award
winner in Tom Green County, as well as being vice-president of the FFA in Miles. He worked on family
stock farms, beginning plowing with teams of mules and horses, and later with tractors. Curtis went to
college at Texas Tech, graduating in 1949 with degrees in Animal Science and Ag Economics, with
minors in economics and pre-law. He always had one to three jobs while a student, one of those jobs
being the assistant to the head of the Animal Science Department. He was involved in many
experimental projects with sheep as an undergraduate. He was a graduate student from 1950 to 1953,
also a tax assessor and appraiser for the Lubbock School District and the city of Lubbock at the same
time. Curtis was on the staff at Texas Tech in the Animal Science Department from 1955 to 1957.
He later was in the Sheep Business near San Angelo and later general contracting. Mr. Beck spent over
three years in the Air Force (1942-1945) as an airplane mechanic including two and a half years at
Goodfellow Air Force Base in the 49th school squad.
He married Billie Jean Arthur in 1949.
He was a fanatic sports fan coming right behind family in importance, and was thrilled to see the sheep
business making a comeback in West Texas. His hobby of writing over the years about politics, current
events and religion were read in newspapers from San Angelo to Fort Worth.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Billie; his father and mother; and brothers Charles and
Bobby.
Survivors include his daughters Lynda Kaye Young, Su and husband Jim Lee, Tonya and Bill Williams,
son Don Beck; grandchildren Jay, Todd and Jennifer Young, Dustin Lee, Stephanie Fisher, Rebekah
Emery, and Betsy and Brook Williams; three grandchildren; and one-great grandchild. Also surviving are
one brother and two sisters.
