Albert Lee Van Zanten [Parents] was born on 17 Feb 1921 in Newton, Jasper Co., IA. He died 1 on 10 Aug 1987 in El Cajon, San Diego, CA. The cause of death was cancer --melanoma. He was buried in Ft.Rosecrans Nat'l Cem., San Diego, CA. He married 2 June Maurine Presley on 10 Oct 1943 in Pasadena, CA.

The following was provided by daughter Jonna:

They attended LIFE Bible College and became ordained ministers in the Four Square Church. They were at a church in Oceanside and later San Ysidro - tough times - no financial support - Dad left ministry to work 2 and 3 jobs; worked at Rohr and went to college to become a teacher. Did teaching at a Jr. High and then they came to El Cajon when he went to work for the high school district. He taught about 30 years, ended as a counselor. Began a Ph.D. program but didn't finish.
He got on the El Cajon city council for many years - was appt mayor for 2 years - when he ran for election as mayor - he lost.
Then he ran for the community college board of trustees and got that - even a 2nd term while he was ill. Served as board president.Mom got a job at a dress shop and later became manager. Most folks remember her in that position - it was a savvy little shop in downtown El Cajon. She proved to my brothers that she had a brain! Later she got a job at a high school as a program clerk and worked there for 10 years.
Both were active in the community - both served as president of the El Cajon Historical Society - Dad was instrumental in saving the building that was the first commercial (hotel) building - he was on the city council and the city bought it and had it moved to its current location - that was 1973. Society still operating and now I'm president. Mom spent years in the Grossmont Christian Women's Club and had 10 years of bible studies in her home.

June Maurine Presley [Parents] was born on 1 Aug 1921 in Ft. Worth, Tarrant Co., Texas. She died on 28 Oct 2006 in El Cajon, San Diego Co., CA. The cause of death was COPD; congestive heart failure. She was buried in Ft.Rosecrans Nat'l Cem., San Diego, CA. She married 1 Albert Lee Van Zanten on 10 Oct 1943 in Pasadena, CA.

Parents were living at 2224 Pearl, Ft. Worth, at time of her birth
Email from June's daughter on Nov 8, 2006:
I called a phone number I had for you to tell you that my mother passed away about 1
1/2 weeks ago; the memorial service is on Friday. I thought you would want to know
about her passing.
Also, she had attempted to mail a book to you but it was returned so the address
must have been incorrect.
Hope you are well - the family is gathering this weekend - we celebrated Mom's 85th
birthday together in August. She is in Heaven now and we are much relieved that her
suffering with her breathing is over.
Your cousin,
Jonna Waite

June Maurine Van Zanten
VAN ZANTEN, JUNE M. August 1, 1921 to October 28, 2006 June Maurine Van Zanten, 85, was a beautiful, vibrant, beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and friend. She passed away at home with family. June was born in Ft. Worth, Texas, the youngest of nine children and a twin. As a girl, June's family moved to Pasadena where she attended school and church and where she worked, and was courted by the debonair Albert L. Van Zanten. She graduated from LIFE Bible College as an ordained minister and after marrying Albert, they served at Four Square churches in Oceanside and San Ysidro. Ultimately, June became the fully-involved spouse of a high school teacher, counselor, and administrator. She was actively involved with her husband while he served on the city council and as mayor of the city of El Cajon in the 1960s. In addition to raising three successful children, June found time to become the manager of the well-known dress shop Valdon's in El Cajon. This background contributed to her flair for style. She also worked for the Grossmont Union High School District. June was active in the El Cajon Historical Society, Grossmont Christian Women's Club, and opened her beloved historical home for tours and weekly bible studies. June was a strong Christian witness her entire life and never wavered in her devotion. Although June loved many things, her three favorites were her family, Christmastime and chocolates. She is survived by her sister, Doris Lent, of Beaverton, Oregon; her three children, Barend L. Van Zanten of Olympia, Washington; James D. Van Zanten of Manhattan Beach, California; and Jonna Waite, of El Cajon, California, and five grandchildren, Gabriel, Trevor, Adrienne, Justin, and Eric. A memorial service will be on Friday, November 10th, 1 p.m., at Shadow Mountain Community Church, 2100 Greenfield Drive, El Cajon, California. A reception will be held at the church immediately afterward. Please sign the guest book at obituaries.uniontrib.com

My mom's ashes are at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetary in San Diego, as well as my Dad's - they were buried with my dad's parents - Dad is with his dad and my mom is with his mother - interesting note: My mom didn't want to be in her father-in-law's grave because he was a "son of a bitch." Almost didn't happen according to rules at the national cemetary (needing to be with husband) but their info is carved into the back of the existing headstones (email from daughter Jonna in 2011)

I’ve looked at the record that’s available on Ancestry, and assume that since the list was signed by the probate judge and returned to the auditor, those on it were pensioners. There’s no other record for E. M. Giles, which may indicate she died before receiving any other payments.
