(Charleston Manuscript Wills, Vol. TT [1774-781, pp. 253-255)In the name of God, Amen, be it remembered that I Joseph WOOD of Craven County in South Carolina planter this twenty ninth day of September in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy four, being very sick and weak in Body but of sound disposing mind Memory and understanding praise be to God for the same, do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in the manner following that is to say
In primus; viz. I order and direct all my just debts and funeral Expenses to be duly paid and satisfied.
Item - I direct that my House and Land that is about twelve miles from Charlestown on Dorchester Road should be sold and what money remains of paying my Debts be layed out in Negroes, and the said Negroes that may or shall be bought with that money to be equally divided between my Children Joseph, Benjamin, Jonathan and David.
Item - I give and bequeath unto my elder & loving Son John WOOD all that Tract of Land where he now lives Containing Three hundred acres and the Negroe boy named Cork which he now has.Item - I give and bequeath to my loving son Joseph WOOD that tract of'Land where he did live which is in the duck ponds Marshes, and a Negroe fellow named John and one hundred acres of Land lying on back Swam p.
Item - I give and bequeath to my loving son Benjamin WOOD one tract of Land known by the name of the Hurricane which I bought of Peter Culp and one land lying on the NorthEast side of Alligator Creed bounding on the Tract I bought of John Gess and John Burk's land on the other side of the Creek, and a Negroe wench named Dafney and if the said Negroe should have any Child or Children they shall be his property and one feather bed and furniture and one Dish and half a dozen plates and one Cow and her increase and hoggs which is at the place where I did live, and also twelve months provision suitable for bread.
Item - I give and bequeath to my loving Son Jonathan WOOD one hundred acres of Land Joining of Joseph WOOD's land and also the back Swamp and one Negroe Boy named Abram and the Cattle and the hogs which is known by the name of his and their Increase.
Item - I give & bequeath to my loving son David WOOD one hundred fifty acres of land adjoining Joseph WOOD's land and Jonathan WOOD's land part of the said Tract and one Negroe wench named Nanny with her Child or Children if she shall have any, they shall be equally his property and also one Cow and her increase which is now to be his and hoggs which has his mark and the Sorrel mare with her increase.
Item - I give and bequeath to my loving Daughter Esther WOOD one Negroe boy named Isaac and one feather bed, which She had in possession
whereas I now think that I have already gave my Loving Daughter Martha Lockart her poshon all ready on marriage now at my death, I think proper to give her Ten pounds Currency & no more, Whereas Mary Sullivant the daughter of Martha Sullivant which bears the name of my Wife thol never had performed as a Wife nither in Carnal fellowship nor filling her Vows in any way atall but absented herself from me in the Year of our Lord one thousand Seven hundred and Sixty nine one September the nineteenth which Easy Can be proved by many and in a Small time after She left me she took up with Richard Betterly and were publick with him and were known by the name of Mrs. Betterly. So therefore as She has been greatly my destruction and ruin so I think it proper at my Death to give her one shilling Sterling and no more.Item - I give and bequeath to Mary the Daughter of Jolley Webb and Ann Webb one Negroe wench one riding horse and Saddle, and the remainder of my household furniture and one hundred pound Currency to be paid in Such furniture as She shall want and one Cow and her increase and all the rest of my Stock of hogs that I have not dispose of and their increase that she should have peacable possession of the plantation where I now live, during her life; and after her decease I give and bequeath it to infant that is in her Womb if it should be the longest liver, and if the said Child should die without-Issue, then to be divided amongst the rest of my Children, and as my Children Come of age or marry they shall have possession of their Land and all other that is given by me, but their Negroe or Negroes shall not be divided, but my Son John WOOD shall have immediately what I give him, and my son Jonathan WOOD shall have what I give him when he Comes of age and the others of my Heirs Mary and Joseph WOOD, Benjamin WOOD and David WOOD their negroe or Negroes shall not be divided untill the space of eight Years but shall remain under my son Joseph WOOD's Care, and shall have their equal part of the Crop according to their hands Yearly and every year, and after my Decease my son Joseph WOOD should be Sole Executrix and mannager of the above interest as hear mentioned further Remembered that if any of these my heirs should die without hear, their the above mentioned Interst should be divided amongst these my Children that Survives, Joseph, Benjamine, Jonathan and David, Esther WOOD and Mary the Daughter of Jolley and Ann Webb; And this I approve for to be my Last Will and testament, and do hereby Dissannull and revoke all other Wills and testaments by me heretofore made.
