John Graham [scrapbook] "JOHN & MARY are hypothetical --using for research purpose".John married Sarah.

This John Graham and wife Sarah were residents of Rowan County, NC. John's will is dated Feb 1795. Among his 8 children, there were Richard and Samuel.. I am estimating that my Samuel W. was born abt 1795 in NC and his probable brother Richard born abt 1786 and they could be the sons of this John & Sarah. I have entered their data as a base for further research The will provides the name of a wife Sarah and then the children. I am "assuming" the children were listed in their birth order: Marry, James, Richard, Moses, Margaret, William Armstrong, Sarah, John and Samuel. If John (Sr.) died in 1795 he could have fathered Samuel also born in 1795. Coincidentally, Samuel is listed last possibly signifying he was the youngest?
Rowan County Deed Book 24, p. 192 #3095

By agreement between this Grantee and Moses Graham, these shares plus this Grantee's share were in one lot. Wit: Christopher Graham, William Graham, Able Graham, Josiah Owen, and John G. Anderson. From Regimental Histories of Tennessee Units During the war of 1812 (on-line at TN Secretary of State):
COLONEL NEWTON CANNON
•DESIGNATION: 2nd Regiment of Volunteer Mounted Riflemen
•DATES: September 1813 - December 1813
•MEN MOSTLY FROM: Bedford, Rutherford, Smith, Dickson, Franklin, Lincoln, Sumner, Williamson, and Wilson Counties
•CAPTAINS: Robert Allen, George Brandon, Ota Cantrell, John B. Demsey, William Edwards, John Hanby, John Harpole, David Hogan, Francis Jones, William Martin, Andrew Patterson, James Walton, Isaac Williams, Thomas Yardley
BRIEF HISTORY:
Along with Colonel John Alcorn's regiment, this unit was part of General John Coffee's brigade that conducted the first campaign into the Creek Nation. Marching from Fayetteville, they went through Huntsville; crossed the Tennessee River at Ditto's Landing (mid-October 1813); stopped at Fort Strother; and fought in the battles at Tallushatchee and Talladega (3 November and 9 November 1813). Muster rolls show that just about every company in this regiment suffered casualties in these battles.
This is a description of Richard's first enlistment in the War of 1812. His captain was John Demsey per the military record of Samuel W. Graham as they both served at the same time/same unit.

(2nd enlistment)

Found an 1820 census of Bedford Co.TN for Richard Graham (this may or may not be Samuel's brother.
COLONEL ROBERT DYER

•DESIGNATION: 1st Regiment of West Tennessee Volunteer Mounted Gunmen
•DATES: September 1814 - March 1815
•MEN MOSTLY FROM: Davidson, Dickson, Williamson, Bedford, Maury, Montgomery, Rutherford, Smith, and Stewart Counties
•CAPTAINS: Bethel Allen, Ephraim D. Dickson, Robert Edmonston, Robert Evans, Cuthbert Hudson, Thomas Jones, James McMahon, Glen Owen, Thomas White, Joseph Williams, James Wyatt
BRIEF HISTORY:
Part of Coffee's brigade at New Orleans, most of this regiment took part in the night battle of 23 December 1814. Most of the company muster rolls show casualties from this engagement. Portions of this regiment also participated in the capture of Pensacola from the Spanish in West Florida (7 November 1814). The initial rendezvous point for this unit was Fayetteville, Tennessee. From there they passed through Fort Hampton, to Baton Rouge, and finally to New Orleans

"We possess microfilmed copies of the Tennessee muster rolls from the War of 1812 but, unfortunately, they are of such poor quality that we do not make mail-order copies. However, I did look at the roll for Captain John B. Dempsey of the 2nd Regiment of Volunteer Mounted Riflemen and located the name of Samuel Graham on that roll, verifying his service in that unit. He served from 24 September 1813 to 22 December 1813. There is a good possibility that Graham lived in Bedford County, as that was the county where his captain resided. Also, for your information, a Richard Graham was listed on the same roll as Samuel.
In regard to two enlistments by Samuel Graham: since enlistment periods were relatively short in the War of 1812, many individuals did serve more than once. This is true in the case of Samuel (and Richard) Graham. You already know of their term of service in Cannon's regiment. Apparently, both Grahams also did a tour of duty in Colonel Robert Dyer's 1st Regiment of Tennessee Mounted Volunteer Gunmen. The captain's name was Ephraim Dickson who, by the way, was from Bedford County. Richard and Samuel served from 28 September 1814 to 28 March 1815. And Richard did apply for bounty land after the war, although neither Richard nor Samuel have a pension application on file. The Bounty Land file for Richard Graham is listed as BLW 13649-160-50. Again, the National Archives should have this file under that numerical designation."
(This statement from Dr. Tom Kanon, archivist at Tennessee State Archives, June 2011. His reference was Virgil White's 3-volume "Index to War of 1812 Pension Files".

**Age determination: Was age 70 on 1860 Mortality Schedule of AR. Data refers to death in previous year so calculated birth year is 1789. On the 1850 census of Phillips Co., AR, Richard's age was 62, calculated birth year is 1788.

**Found a Richard Graham on the 1820 census of Bedford County, TN -had 5 male children & 2 female children. Owned 3 slaves.
