Obituary
Walter E. Smith, 81, of 806 E. 14th, died at 10:10 p.m. Sunday in a local rest home. He had been ill since November, 1967
Services were to be held today at 4:30 p.m. at the River-Welch Chapel, with Rev. Bill Arnett officiating. Burial was to be in the City Cemetery.
He was born in Tyerly, Ga., Oct. 6, 1886, and came to Howard Co. just before the turn of the century. He and his wife were married in Big Spring July 30, 1908. Mr. Smith, a retired farmer, had farmed in the Knott community, and was a former minister. He had pastored several area churches in the early 1900's. He was a member of the East Fourth Street Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Minnie Mae Smith; three daughters, Mrs. Thelma Ayers and Mrs. Jessie Berner, both of Odessa, and Mrs. Merle Sheppard, Connecticut; two sons, Edmond Smith, Rock Island, Ill., and David Smith, Big Spring; four sisters, Mrs. Emma Scott and Mrs. Daisy Gaffey, both of Stanton, and Mrs. Lucille Samples and Mrs. Annie Smith, both of Big Spring; also 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Nephews will be pallbearers.

Mrs. Walter E. (Minnie Mae) Smith, 88, died at 2:50 p.m., Saturday following a long illness.
Grave side services will be at 10 A.M., Monday in Mount Olive Memorial Park under the direction of Nalley-Pickle Funeral Home.
Mrs. Smith was born Jan. 28, 1891, in Arkansas. She had resided most of her life in Howard Co. . She married Walter E. Smith July 30, 1908, in Big Spring. He died March 3, 1968.
Survivors include two sons, David Smith, Big Spring, and Edmond Smith, Rock Island, Ill.; three daughters, Mrs. Thelma Ayers and Mrs. Jessie Verner, both of Odessa, and Mrs. Merle Bundy, Tacoma, Wash.; a sister Annie Jo McFarland, Dallas.
