Brother André was a lowly member of the Congregation of the Holy Cross when he started his faith healing in honour of St Joseph, husband of the Virgin Mary. By 1904 he and his followers had built a small oratory on the northwest slope of Mount Royal, then from 1924-55 the basilica of the Oratoire St-Joseph was built in his honour and as a centre for the Catholic trade union movement.
